Ecdysis is a project expressed through wearable art and performance. It takes perspective on the collective scream, shared hysteria, mutual and contagious emotion. Each performative character wears their dead emotional skin externally, presenting their bodily flesh but shielding their identity. The performers enter a meditative state, before exploring different internal emotions and expressing them through movement. The emotive tug between the performers defines the direction and duration of the performance. The piece is inspired by collective, and perhaps performative outpourings of shared emotion in society, such as the public mourning of Princess Diana’s death. The chronical of the performance initiates a notional mouth-to-mouth mythology as the internal becomes external. Meanwhile, wearable objects retain their own personal histories, such as the shells being collected from cruising beaches.
